In Northern Saskatchewan, horsetail plants grow in cool, moist, forested areas and is very common. Horsetail plants spread by spores as opposed to seed. They are primitive plants and have been around for over 300 million years.
Horsetail has been used for various health issues including:
- Bone health: Horsetail contains silicon, which can help strengthen bones and may help with osteoporosis.
- Bleeding: Horsetail has been used to stop bleeding and heal wounds. Diuretic: Horsetail can act as a diuretic, increasing urination, and has been used in traditional Indigenous medicine to treat bladder infections.
- Hair and nail health: Horsetail's high concentration of silicon may help with hair growth and brittle nails. Anti-inflammatory: Horsetail may have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
- Cosmetics: Horsetail is an ingredient in some cosmetics. Household uses: Horsetail's abrasive texture can be used to clean dishes, sand wood, and polish metal.
Horsetail may cause vitamin B1 deficiency when used long-term.
Further research into the medicinal uses of Horsetail is needed to better understand definitively the plant’s health benefits. There is not enough scientific information available to guarantee safety for pregnant and breastfeeding women.
