Birch polypore is found exclusively on birch throughout the northern hemisphere. A piece of birch polypore was found on Otzi the iceman. The fungus is common on dead birch through the Boreal Forest of Northern Saskatchewan.
This fungus is believed to have potential health benefits, including:
- Antimicrobial: which contains the antibiotic piptamine, which can treat E. Coli.
- Anti-inflammatory: contains triterpene acids, which are known to reduce inflammation.
