Green alder is a shrub native to Eastern, Interior and Western North America and is prevalent in the Saskatchewan Boreal Forest.
Green alder leaves have been used for astringent properties that can help treat skin irritations and hemorrhoids, and is anti-inflammatory, both internally and externally. The leaves have been used for pain relief and as a poultice to treat venomous stings and bites, as well as simple wounds, splinters, and scrapes. Uses have also included supporting liver functions.
Not recommended for use during pregnancy.
Further research into the medicinal uses of Alder is needed to better understand definitively the plants health benefits. There is not enough scientific information available to guarantee safety for pregnant and breastfeeding women.
