Hoof Fungus is found in northern latitudes, including in North America and Eurasia. In Northern Saskatchewan it is common on dead birch trees. Fomes fomentarius is a decomposer that breaks down dead and decaying wood, returning nutrients to the soil.
Fomes fomentarius has been used in traditional medicine to treat a variety of conditions, including:
- Oral ulcers, Gastroenteric disorders, Inflammations, Dysmenorrhea, Hemorrhoids, Bladder disorders, and Pain relief.
- Fomes fomentarius contains bioactive compounds such as polysaccharides, glycoproteins, proteoglycans, terpenoids, fatty acids, proteins, and lectins. Studies have shown that F. fomentarius has anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties.
Further research into the medicinal uses of Hoof Fungus is needed to better understand definitively the fungus’ health benefits. There is not enough scientific information available to guarantee safety for pregnant and breastfeeding women.
