Fireweed (fermented) - Chamaenerion angustifolium

35 g - 100 g - 1 lb

Our fermented fireweed goes through a special preparation process in which it is chopped and ground green, and then allowed to ferment for 24 hours to allow the sugars to start working. It is then dried. This process changes and enrichens the flavour. This is a similar production method as that used for Russian Ivan Chai.
Fireweed is a common plant in northern Saskatchewan that grows in disturbed areas, especially after fires. It is one of the first plant to grow after a wildfire and helps prepare the forest for regeneration.
Fireweed is believed to have potential health benefits, including:

  • Anti-inflammatory: Fireweed has potent anti-inflammatory properties that can be used to treat skin conditions like diaper rash, sore gums, and other inflammatory diseases.
  • Diuretic: Fireweed is used to help with cystitis, urethritis, and other urinary tract infections. It can also help improve kidney function and reduce puffiness. It is it used by some to assist with benign enlarged prostate.
  • Digestive aid: Fireweed tea is used to aid digestion. Tonic: Fireweed tea is rich in vitamins A and C and can be used as a general tonic for the body.

Further research into the medicinal uses of Fireweed is needed to better understand definitively the plant’s health benefits. There is not enough scientific information available to guarantee safety for pregnant and breastfeeding women.
