Wild mint (Mentha arvensis) is a common, native plant in Northern Saskatchewan that can be found in wet areas along riverbanks, streams, and the margins of lakes. It's a member of the mint family and has a strong minty smell.
Wild mint has many potential health benefits, including:
- Digestion - Wild mint leaves can help with digestion, gas, heartburn, ulcers, and colic. The active oil in mint, menthol, helps break down food and relieve bloating.
- Pain relief - Wild mint can be used to make an ointment to relieve aches and pains. Peppermint oil can also be applied topically to relieve itching, muscle pain, and headaches.
- Other health benefits - Wild mint can also be used as a drying agent (astringent) and stimulant. Native Americans used wild mint to treat toothaches, fevers, pneumonia, stomach cramping, diarrhea, and arthritis.
- Tea - Wild mint is often prepared as a tea. First Nations people traditionally used it as a hot beverage and herbal remedy.
- Breastfeeding pain - Mint may help decrease breastfeeding pain.
- Cold symptoms - Mint may subjectively improve cold symptoms.
- Bad breath - Mint may mask bad breath. Brain function - Mint may improve brain function.
Boreal Heartland markets wild mint in its Boreal Seasoning line. It has a cooling and sweet flavour and works well in cookies, fruit salads, and with chocolate.
Further research into the medicinal uses of Wild Mint is needed to better understand definitively the plant’s health benefits. There is not enough scientific information available to guarantee safety for pregnant and breastfeeding women.
