In Northern Saskatchewan we call them cranberries, but to the rest of the world they are lingonberries. They are a common, edible, and native fruit in northern Saskatchewan that can be found in bogs and muskeg. Ours are wild harvested by local Indigenous people.
- Lingonberries have many potential health benefits, including:
- Antioxidants: Lingonberries are high in antioxidants, including anthocyanins, which may help prevent heart disease and some cancers.
- Anti-inflammatory: Lingonberries may help prevent low-grade inflammation, which can lead to other health issues like cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer's disease, and metabolic syndrome.
- Blood sugar: Lingonberries may help control blood sugar levels. Heart health: Lingonberries may promote heart health.
- Gut health: Lingonberries may promote healthy gut bacteria. Vitamins and minerals: Lingonberries are a good source of vitamins C and E, as well as potassium, calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium.
Further research into the medicinal uses of Lingonberries is needed to better understand definitively the plant’s benefits. There is not enough scientific information available to guarantee safety for pregnant and breastfeeding women.
